| PARTICIPATION IN
ROUNDTABLES
The concept of the roundtables is that of a meeting of eminent persons from
the region.
Criteria for 'eminence' will include one or more of the following:
I. Highly significant experience and demonstrated achievement in areas which
could include:
- Sustainable development;
- Involvement in regional and or UN processes relating to sustainable
development; and,
- Acknowledged and respected generally in the region or sub-region as leaders
in their area of expertise.
II. Acknowledged and respected by an interest group e.g. a person may be
recognized by business groups as a leading representative of business and able
to make a significant contribution relating to the interests of the group.
Participants should not be from governments i.e. should not be representing
the views of governments. However most participants would be likely to have
significant government contacts at a high level and generally participants'
views would be likely to receive serious consideration by governments.
Overall the participants should be people who could offer inspirational and
pragmatic approaches to implementation of sustainable development and whose
suggestions would receive serious consideration at the regional and global
prepcoms.
Not all countries in a region need to have a participant who is a citizen of
the country although all participants should have citizenship in the region.
The regional round tables will cover the interests and perceptions of all
regions of the world .
The interests of all nine Major Groups that are part of the CSD process will
be represented at the roundtables. But these participants while being able to
speak authoritatively and expertly on the needs of these groups should not
attend the roundtable in a formal representational sense.
The majority of the participants will have some links to the major groups
e.g. they may be from the private sector, or a scientist or a farmer. However
some participants may not have such a connection e.g. a retired distinguished
former ambassador or a well-known author.
It is anticipated that approximately 25 30 eminent persons would be
invited to each roundtable.
DESA and the host country/host organization will provide secretariat support.
