PRE-REGISTRATION
AND ACCREDITATION OF MAJOR GROUPS
Facts and Forms
Thank you for your interest in being a part of the Johannesburg 2002 process --
the World Summit on Sustainable Development and its Preparatory Committee
(Prepcom) meetings.
The Johannesburg 2002 process emphasizes participation of major groups, based
on the decisions of the first Prepcom in late April 2001 (Prepcom I decisions). These decisions enable a preparatory
process and a Summit that is open, transparent and highly participatory. The
Summit is expected to be the largest global event to-date and to set new
participatory precedents.
Where do I start ?
If your organization wants to participate in the Summit or its Prepcoms, it
must first be accredited. Only organizations can be accredited to an
inter-governmental meeting. Individuals wishing to participate in the Summit or
its preparatory process must be affiliated with an accredited organization.
For accreditation purposes, the UN considers all Major Group organizations as
Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs), and accredits them as such even though
the organization may represent major group constituencies such as womens
organizations, youth groups, associations of local authorities, indigenous
peoples groups, business associations, trade unions, scientific bodies or
farmers organizations.
Prepcom I decided that all NGOs that are currently in consultative status with
the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), including those on the CSD List,
are automatically accredited to the Johannesburg 2002 process. These NGOs need
only to pre-register to inform the Summit Secretariat that they are
participating. (Follow this link to go to the
pre-registration process)
Non-governmental actors that are not currently in consultative status with
ECOSOC (or not on the CSD List) need to apply for accreditation with the
Summit. (Follow this link to go to the accreditation process).
Once accredited, non-governmental actors can send representatives to any or all
of the four steps of the Summit:
