| 101 Ways to Sustainable Development FinlandFinland's Summit preparatory committee nominated the initiative "Sports and Environment Project" as Finland's national winner and candidate in the international initiative. The project deals with all the different aspects of SD and has been successful in promoting environmental values in the sports community at the national, sports association and individual level. Background In Finland, the environment as an element of sport has been a current issue throughout the 1990s. Environmentally responsible sport and recreation is ecologically, economically and culturally sound and fulfills the principles of sustainable development along with social development. The role of sport in reducing environmental problems lies partly in the development of a responsible sports culture but more importantly in its role as an environmental educator. The Sports and Environment Project was launched in the late 1990s to address these objectives. Goals and target groups The objective of the Sports and Environment Project has transferred know-how and developed materials, tools and consulting for member organizations (national associations representing individual sports and regional organizations) and at the grassroots level (sports clubs, sports camps and sports events) to facilitate the continuous development of environmental activities at these levels. The materials that are being used have been created in an participatory manner together with the target group. The project is carried on in various ways in real life situations: sports camps, sports facilities, sports events and every day life sports activities in sports clubs all around the country. Some of the practical examples of the results of the project include the more efficient use of energy in sports halls, compostable dishes at sports events, trip sharing (car pooling) to practice sessions and recycling of equipment. Many organizations are involved in this work including the Finnish Sports Federation, local organizations, sports clubs and the network of key persons who play a crucial role in influencing activities. Other cooperation partners include the Ministries of the Environment and Education and various partners from the business community. The main partners are the National Paper Recycling Company, Paperinkerays Oy and the National Energy Information Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources, Motiva. __________________________________________________________________
