Austria National
Preparations
The preparations in Austria for the World Summit on Sustainable Development
2002 are coordinated between several ministries and institutions. In this
regard, the Austrian Council for Sustainable Development (ACSD) has an
important role to play.
The ACSD was founded in the year 1991 by the Austrian Ministry for Environment
as UNCED - Commission to prepare the Conference in Rio 1992. This Commission
was renamed 1997 as "Austrian Council for Sustainable Development."
The members of the ACSD (representatives of all ministries, local governments,
business, science, major groups, NGOs etc.) are meeting regularly approximately
every month. The main task is to share information on sustainable development
and to prepare the national reports for the CSD and the national position for
the negotiations in New York.
The ACSD is also the overall committee for the national review of progress in
the implementation of Agenda 21, as invited by the UN Commission on Sustainable
Development and UN General-Assembly. This review is expected to be completed by
the end of 2001.
Austria is also working on a National Strategy for Sustainable Development and
has published a "Green-Paper" on this issue in June. This paper is
the basis for the further elaboration of the NSSD, which is expected to be
completed by the end of this year.
As a contribution to the Johannesburg-Summit Austria as the chair of the
environment group of the Central European Initiative (CEI) is organizing a
Workshop for the countries of the CEI, which will take place in November 2001
in Vienna. The workshop will focus the topics "Energy" and
"Transport" with particular emphasis on regional problems and
possible sustainable solutions in the CEI region.
Austria also actively participates in the EU preparations for the
Johannesburg-Summit.
A great number of major groups and NGOs in Austria (e.g. Austrian Chamber of
Commerce, Eco-Bureau, Austrian Business Council for Sustainable Development)
are also organizing various projects and events in preparation for the
Johannesburg-Summit.
