Cuba National Preparations

Cuba National Preparations In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government of Cuba established a National Preparatory Committee on 15 February 2001. The Committee is coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Environment and another 20 institutions of the State Central Administration, which represent the economic, cultural and social sectors (Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente como coordinador y otros 20 Organismos de la Administración Central del Estado que representan los sectores de la economía, la cultura y la sociedad en general). The Committee will be Chaired by Dr. Fabio Fajardo Moros, Viceministro, Ministerio de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente (CITMA).

Major groups are also represented, and include the following: Federación de Mujeres Cubanas, Comités de Defensa de La Revolución, Brigadas Técnicas Juveniles, Fundación "A.N.J". dela Naturaleza y el Hombre, Pronaturaleza. Asociación Nacional de Agricultores Pequeños, CUBASOLAR, Consejo de Iglesias de Cuba, Círculo de Periodistas de la Ciencia, Hábitat Cuba, Sociedad de Pedagogos de Cuba, Asociación Cubana de Técnicos Agrícolas y Forestales, Unión Nacional de arquitectos e Ingenieros de Cuba.

Other participants include the Centros de Educación Superior, Sectores de la Economía y otras ONGs.

In addition, Cuba is undertaking a national review and assessment of progress in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be completed by 30 March 2001.

Under other Preparatory activities, Cuba will be one of two countries that will host "The World Day of the Environment" on 5 June 2001. A National Workshop on Rio+10 will take place from 22 to 24 March 2001. In June 2001 they will celebrate the Third International Convention on the Environment & Development. (Cuba será una de las dos sedes del 5 de Junio "Día Mundial del Medio Ambiente." El Taller Nacional Río + 10 se celebrará del 22 al 24 de Marzo del 2001. En junio del 2001 se celebrará la III Convención Internacional sobre Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo ).
