Dominican Republic National
Preparations
In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government
of The Dominican Republic established a National Preparatory Committee in
January 2001. The Committee is composed of representatives from the following
government agencies: National Commission for the further implementation of
UNCED (created in 1992, equivalent to a UN CONADES) plus Secretariat for the
state of the enviroment and natural resources (created in August 2000). The
Committee will be Chaired by the Vice President of the Republic, Dr Milagros
Ortiz Bosch.
All the Major groups mentioned in Agenda 21 will also be represented in the
Committee. Other participants include Entrepreneurial Groups.
In addition, the Dominican Republic is undertaking a national review and
assessment of progress in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to
be completed in March 2001.
Other Preparatory activities include A National Workshop for Valuable
Experiences in Sustainable Development, which took place from 16-17 January
2001.
