CEE Regional Sustainable Development Conference |
The Central and Eastern European (CEE) "Regional Conference on Sustainable Development - Rio+ 10" was held in Bucharest, Romania, from 27 - 28 June 2001. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Waters and Environmental Protection, UNDP Romania/NCSD and the Black Sea University Foundation jointly organized the Conference, under the aegis of the Presidency of Romania and the Romanian Government. The financial and technical support for the Conference was provided by Earth Council, Capacity 21, UNDP Romania Country Office. The Conference aimed to demonstrate the Romanian commitment to endorsement of sustainable development processes and consequent undertaking of national reviews and preparation of regional recommendations of progress in implementing the Rio 92 Earth Summit commitments, with a focus on critical issues as well as implementation and governance concerns. Also, since Romania is considered to be a Regional Focal Point for the World Summit preparatory process by the support organizations (Earth Council, Capacity 21, UNDP), it was proposed to convene the Regional Conference in Bucharest, with broad participation from all the countries of the region. This Regional Conference was designed to be a follow-up to the "Carpathian - Danube Summit on Environment and Sustainable Development," held in Bucharest, Romania, from 29 - 30 April 2001. |
