Honduras National
Preparations
In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government
of Honduras announced the establishment of a National Preparatory Committee
during the ordinary session of the National Council for Sustainable Development
(CONADES) which took place in Tegucigalpa on 22 February 2001. This Committee
will constitute a sub-committee of CONADES, and will be in charge of
implementing and following up the national sustainable development strategies
integrating private and public sector, academic professionals, civil society
and international organizations.
In addition, Honduras has completed its
national review and assessment of progress in the
implementation of Agenda 21. In order for everyone to pull in the same
direction, and to avoid multiple strategic and competitive frameworks from the
government, private enterprises, civil society, and international financial
organizations, the National Report of the government of Honduras looks at a
convergence between the Strategy for the Reduction of Poverty (ERP), and the
National Strategy for Sustainable Development (ENDS), within the overall
Comprehensive Development Framework of the World Bank and of the UNDP.
This Report contains their second revised proposal on the ENDS, which they hope
to implement along with its criteria and indicators of sustainable development,
to be put onto practice by the year 2005 in accordance with international
obligations for sustainable development derives from Agenda 21, the Alianza
Centro Americana for sustainable development (ALIDES), and the Summits of the
Inter-American Summit. In addition to ENDS, they have also analyzed the POA of
CONADES 2001 together with the National Programme for Sustainable Rural
Development (PRONADERS), the Forest Policies of Protected Areas and Wild Life
of the AFE - COHDEFOR and the Strategy for Biodiversity of the Secretariat of
Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA).
