National Preparations
In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government
of India established a National Preparatory Committee on 5 March 2001. The
Committee is composed of representatives from concerned government Ministries.
It will be Chaired by the Secretary of Environment and Forests.
Major groups, including NGOs, are also represented. Other participants, such as
Industry and Citizens Groups will be involved at a later date for review and
consultation.
In addition, India is undertaking a national review and assessment of progress
in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be completed by April
2002. The Indian government is also launching three initiatives proposed by the
Summit Secretariat to ensure greater participation of all partners.
The estimated timeframes for completion of these Initiatives is as follows:
Other Preparatory activities include the Government of India's plans to hold
painting, essay and quiz competitions on thematic issues. Exhibitions on two
themes are also being firmed up.
