Israel
National Preparations
In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government
of Israel is establishing a National Preparatory Committee, which is expected
to be formed by March 2001. The Committee will be composed of representatives
from the following ministries: Environment, and Education. The Committee will
be Chaired by Ms. Valerie Brachya, Deputy Director General, Ministry of the
Environment.
The Committee is also expected to include representatives of major groups,
including NGOs and Universities.
In addition, Israel is undertaking its national review and assessment of the
progress made in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be
completed by June 2001. Israel is also planning to launch the "four
initiatives" proposed by the Summit Secretariat to ensure greater
participation of all partners. The estimated timeframes for completion of these
Initiatives is as follows:
Other preparatory activities include the organization of local activities
concerning sustainable development and local Agenda 21.
