National Preparations
In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government
of Mauritius has established a National Preparatory Committee composed of
representatives from the following ministries: Environment, Tourism, Local
Government, R, R and UD, Housing and Lands. The Committee will be Chaired by
the Minister of Environment.
The Committee is also composed of representatives of major groups, including
NGOs and Educational Institutions.
Other participants include people of different generations: young, adolescent,
and children.
In addition, Mauritius is undertaking its national review and assessment of the
progress made in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be
completed in early 2002. Mauritius is also planning to launch the "four
initiatives" proposed by the Summit Secretariat to ensure greater
participation of all partners.
Other preparatory activities include the recruitment, in the near future, of a
local consultant who will draft a report on the review process and coordinate
the whole process.
