Norway National
Preparations
In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government
of Norway has announced that the National Committee for International
Environmental Issues "NIM" will serve as the National Preparatory
Committee for the 2002 World Summit. This Committee is composed of
representatives from the following government agencies: Prime Minister's
Office, Ministry of the Environment, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Other
ministries which may participate include the ministries of Finance, Trade and
Industry, Oil and Energy, Communications and Transport, Fisheries, Agriculture,
Family and Consumer Affairs. The Minister of Environment will Chair this
Committee.
Major groups being represented include the following: The Norwegian Federation
of Labour Unions, the Confederation of Norwegian Business and Industry, ForUM
for Environment and Development (NGO umbrella organization), The Norwegian
Nature Conservation Association.
Other participants include the Norwegian Association of Local and Regional
Authorities, and the Norwegian Research Council.
In addition, Norway is undertaking a national review and assessment of progress
in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be completed by 1
March 2001.
Other preparations include the establishment of a web site with all relevant
information and links to Norwegian and foreign institutions. This web site will
