Philippines National Preparations

In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government of Philippines has announced that The Philippine Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), will serve as its National Preparatory Committee. The PCSD, which was established in 1992 as the Philippine’s response to the call for sustainable development is the same body that is lead for the country’s preparations for the review of Agenda 21. The Council has assigned a Core Group, composed of PCSD members and experts in the SD-related fields, which will be the lead in the ground work for the PCSD.

The PCSD is composed of representatives from the following government agencies: Departments of Agriculture, Agrarian Reform, Budget & Management, Education, Energy, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Health, Interior &Local Government, National Defense, Public Works & Highways, Science & Technology, Social Welfare, Tourism, Trade & Industry, Transportation and Communication.The lead agency is the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

Major groups are represented through the Civil Society Counterpart council for Sustainable Development (representatives from: women, youth, farmers, fisherfolk, indigenous people, Moro and Cordillera groups, urban poor, persons with disabilities, academe, professionals, religious groups and NGOs).

Other participants include the Philippine Chamber for Commerce and Industry and the Management Association of the Philippines ( Business ) Trade Union Congress of the Philippines and the Labor Advisory Confederate Council (Labor).

In addition, Philippines is undertaking a national review and assessment of progress in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be completed by September 2001.
