Switzerland National
Preparations
In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government
of Switzerland has established a National Preparatory Committee. The Committee
is composed of representatives from the following government agencies: Swiss
Agency for Development and Cooperation SDC (lead agency), State Secretariat for
Economic Affairs, Swiss Agency for the Environment, Forests and Landscape; with
the support of 15 other government agencies. The Committee will be Chaired by
Ambassador Giovannini Jean-Francois, Deputy Director of the Swiss Agency for
Development and Cooperation SDC.
Major groups will be included in a consultation process during 2001 and 2002.
In addition, Switzerland is undertaking a national review and assessment of
progress in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be completed
by the end of May 2001. The Swiss government is also launching one of the
"national initiatives" proposed by the Summit Secretariat to ensure
greater participation of all partners:
Under other Preparatory activities, a major study entitled "Sustainable
development in Switzerland - position and prospects" is under way, and is
expected to be completed by the end of April 2001. This policy related
reflection on past and future ways of achieving sustainable development in
Switzerland is to be conducted independently of the Federal Council and the
Administration. The study shall be used as a source of reflection with regard
to a new strategy of the Federal Council on "Implementation of the Agenda
21 in Switzerland," which will be adopted at the beginning of 2002.
