Uzbekistan National Preparations

In preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Government of Uzbekistan established an Interdepartmental Group (IG) to function as the National Preparatory Committee on 31 October 2000. The Committee is composed of representatives from the following government agencies: The Secretariat of Department of Aqroindustrial Complex of Cabinet Ministers; Ministries of Macroeconomics and Statistics, of Foreign Affairs; State Committee for Nature Protection, Main Administration of Hydrometeorology - of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Interdepartmental Group will be Chaired by Mr. Bahodir A. Hodjaev, Deputy Minister of Macroeconomic and Statistics of the Republic of Uzbekistan/ Ministry of Macroeconomics and Statistics.

Major groups are also represented, such as: International Funds: of Ecology and Health "Ecosan", "Soglom avlod uchun"("For Healthy Generation").

Other participants include the Agency for Implementation of GEF and ASBM Projects of International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea.

In addition, Uzbekistan is undertaking a national review and assessment of progress in the implementation of Agenda 21, which is expected to be completed by March 2001. The National report and assessment of progress in the implementation of Agenda 21 on activities of NSDC during the period of 1997-2000 has been prepared within the framework UN CSD and submitted to Commission on the Assembly (CSD –YI-IX, 1997-2000) by the National Structure (Commission) on Sustainable Development (NSSD) of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The government of Uzbekistan is also launching the "four initiatives" proposed by the Summit Secretariat to ensure greater participation of all partners.

The estimated timeframes for completion of these Initiatives is as follows:

101 Ways to Sustainable Development (NSSD of Uzbekistan in common with MG and NGO to conduct National Hearing in April 2001)
Sustainable Development Visions for the 21st Century (NSSD of Uzbekistan in common with MG and NGO to conduct National Competition in April 2001)
Children's Agenda 21 Posters (NSSD of Uzbekistan in common with MG and NGO to conduct National Competition in December 2001)
National Progression Targets (NSSD of Uzbekistan in common with MG, NGO and Public organizations to conduct series of Meetings, Seminars for consideration of National Target for implementation of sustainability in March-December 2001)

Other Preparatory activities include the following:

Conducting wide campaign drives: Earth Day (April) and World Day of Environmental protection (May-July)
Organizing studies on economic mechanisms, environment, preparation of Local Strategy and Capacity 21
Supporting a proposal to organize Second International Forum on "Youth & Earth Charter"
