UN Issues New Stamps on Climate Change
16 November, New York Climate change, a challenge the world is moving to
confront, is the subject of a new series of brightly coloured stamps issued
today by the United Nations Postal Administration.
The stamps feature images of ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions-including
electric cars charged by solar power-trains and bicycles-interspersed with
healthy images of nature.
Designed by the artist Robert Guasti, the stamps are produced in sets of three
in denominations set in U.S. dollars, Swiss francs and Austrian shillings.
Countries recently moved closer to finalizing agreement on the Kyoto Protocol
to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Marrakech,
Morocco. Many governments and non-governmental organizations hope that enough
countries will ratify the protocol so that it will enter into force in time for
the World Summit on Sustainable Development, which will be held in Johannesburg
next September..
The Climate Convention was one of the important treaties signed at the Earth
Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
