Johannesburg Summit to be a Smoke-Free Zone
New York, 16 August No smoking will be allowed in the Sandton Convention
Centre in Johannesburg during the World Summit on Sustainable Development,
according to United Nations officials.
South African law normally does not allow smoking in the Centre. But
officially, the site will become UN territory for the duration of the Summit,
from 26 August to 4 September, and the decision on whether to permit smoking
rests with the UN. Nevertheless, Summit officials said they would abide by the
local rules.
The UN has actively moved, in recent years, to discourage smoking in most parts
of its headquarters in New York.
