For Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) NOT in consultative status with
the Economic and Social Council (including the CSD List)
First things first
.
All major group organizations currently not in consultative status with the
Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (or not on the CSD List) and
wish to take part in the Johannesburg 2002 process must apply for
accreditation. Accreditation decisions are made by the Summits
Preparatory Committee (Prepcom) meetings.
Accreditation enables non-governmental organizations to send representatives to
the Summit or its Prepcoms and make contributions to the process by bringing
their experiences, views, and suggestions as they relate to the Summits
themes.
Once an organization is granted accreditation at any stage of the preparatory
process, it is accredited for the duration including the Summit. Review of
applications will be carried out at the beginning of the following Prepcom
meetings:
- Prepcom
2
New York, UN Headquarters, 28 January - 8 February 2002
- Prepcom
3
New York, UN Headquarters, 25 March - 5 April
- Prepcom
4
Bali, Indonesia, 27 May - 7 June 2002
- Johannesburg
2002
Johannesburg, South Africa, 26 August - 04 September 2002

complete the application process. You must provide additional information as
specified in the form. Please read the instructions on the form carefully.
Application Deadlines

February 2002

Three steps to accreditation
- Fill out the accreditation form. All new applicants for
Summit accreditation must start by providing the Summit Secretariat with basic
information regarding their organization. Follow this link to go to the
accreditation form. The form aims to elicit information that will help us
determine your organizations relevance and competence in the field of
sustainable development. Please provide answers that are clear and concise to
help us understand your organizations work, the experience it can bring
to the Johannesburg 2002 process, and the potential contribution it can make to
the Summits goals.
- Submit additional materials (hard copies). Your application
is not complete until the Summit Secretariat receives the additional materials
requested in the accreditation form. Please send hard copies of these
materials, along with a print out of the completed accreditation form to the
following mailing address or fax number:
Johannesburg Summit Secretariat
United Nations Major Groups Relationships
2 United Nations Plaza, 22nd Floor
New York NY 10017
Fax: +1- 917- 367- 2341 or +1- 917- 367- 2342
These materials must be received by the deadlines listed above. Please note
that the Summit Secretariat cannot process your application until all required
information is received.
- Receive confirmation letter from the Secretariat. The Summit
Secretariat will confirm completion of the application in writing.
What is next?
Based on the
Prepcom I decision, the Summit Secretariat together with
the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) will review the applications to
determine each applicant organizations relevance to and competence in the
field of sustainable development. Those for whom relevance and competence is
established will be recommended to Prepcom 2, 3 or 4 (depending on when the
application is received) for an inter-governmental review. The Summit
Secretariat will notify those organizations that are granted accreditation by
the Prepcom by fax or email immediately, to facilitate their participation as
soon as possible.
