101 Ways to Sustainable
Development
Islamic Republic of Iran
In Islamic Republic of Iran, the National prep.Committee for WSSD has prepared
a list of projects which have been implemented by governmental sectors. There
are 82 projects that they have been submitted to the Committee. The outstanding
projects of the country have been selected to introduce to the Secretariat of
WSSD within this context
- Urban and Rural Islamic Council elections in order to raise public
participation roles in the country
- Cleaner production in 10 petrochemical complex
- Healthy city, Healthy village projects in 56 cities of the country
- Comprehensive air pollution abatement plan for Tehran
- Siberian Crane protection project in Mazandaran province.
Description of the projects :
1-Urban and Rural Islamic Council election
The Ministry of Interior in collaboration with other sectors is implemented
this project. The project is focused on chapter 23-29 0f Agenda 21 and started
from 1999. In this project, representatives from rural and urban sections were
elected by people. Rural representatives are involved in sectoral Islamic
Council and elected the representatives who involve in municipal Islamic
Councils. These representatives and urban representatives together are
involving in State Islamic Council.
The Ministry of Interior has decided to establish a Supreme State Council. The
representatives of the State Islamic Council will be involved in this
Council.
The objectives and targets of the project are as follows:
- To perform principals of constitution relevant to Councils
- To raise public participation and social activities
The outcomes of the project are as follows:
- Most of the Social, Economical and Cultural problems are involved in these
Councils.
- The representatives scramble to perform the projects and plans in every
state.
2-Healthy city, Healthy village projects
The Ministry of health in collaboration with other sectors has established a
coordinate council, which is, implemented this project in the country. The
project is focused on chapter 6 of Agenda 21 and started in 1996.The objectives
and targets of the project are as follows:
- Raising public awareness relevant to health and sanitation
- Promoting sanitation and health in the society
- Raising awareness of policymakers and experts in different sections and
organizations
The outcomes of the project are as follows:
- To build up participation between governmental and non-governmental sectors
- To raise public participation in related to perform plans
3-Comprehensive air pollution abatement plan for Tehran
Department of the environment in collaboration with other sectors has
implemented the project in Tehran. This study has started from 1992.It is
focused on chapter 9 of Agenda 21. The objectives and targets of the project
are in accordance with prevention of air pollution because of transporting
system. The outcomes of the project will be as follows: implementation
programmes for 1- new cars, 2- old cars, 3- public transportation,4- Natural
Gas, 5- mechanical checking , 6- Traffic management and 7- public
Education.
4- Siberian Crane protection project in Mazandaran
Department of the Environment in collaboration with other organization is
implemented the project in Mazandaran province. This project is focused on
chapter 15 of Agenda 21. In this project, experts of the Department of the
Environment have taught to indigenous people that how they can conserve
Siberian Crane on this region. The outcome of the project is: indigenous people
have conserved the wetland of this Crane especially in winters.
5- Cleaner production in 10 petrochemical complex
The Ministry of Industry and Mine in collaboration with other sectors is being
implemented the project. It is focused on chapter 30 of Agenda 21. This project
is implemented in form of pilot plan in one petrochemical complex. The
objectives and targets of the project are as follows:
- Achievement to technical information of cleaner production in
petrochemical industries.
- To develop cleaner production culture in petrochemical complexes
- To decrease environmental pollution in complex
- To establish Environmental Management System (EMS) on the base of low
consuming of basic materials and waste management in complexes
- To determine cleaner production pattern in petrochemical complex.
