The four-city tour, from 5-8 August, will take Desai to Chicago, Denver,
Minneapolis, and Houston where he will meet with a wide range of city
officials, business leaders, environmentalists, and the press.
"There has been a huge amount of work at the city and local levels in many
cities across the United States," Desai said, and it's time we teamed up
with these partners to make the Johannesburg Summit, and the future of
sustainable development, a success."
Over 100 world leaders have indicated that they will attend the Summit, an
historic opportunity to commit to actions that will promote sustainable
development. The world leaders will be joined by business leaders and citizen
and community activists to generate projects and programmes that will achieve
measurable results.
In Chicago, Desai will appear at a roundtable sponsored by the Environmental
Law and Policy Center of Chicago and the Better World Campaign, meet with the
environmental staff of the Mayor's office, and attend a Town Hall Meeting at
the Chicago Kent College of Law at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
Desai will then move on to Minneapolis, where he will meet with executives from
Cargill, Inc., and international marketer, processor and distributor of
agricultural, food, financial and industrial products and services. He will
also attend a luncheon with the Mayor and key local and business leaders before
attending a sustainable development conference at the University of St. Thomas
in downtown Minneapolis.
In Denver, Desai will meet with various members of the press and will be the
keynote speaker Public Forum on the World Summit on Sustainable Development at
the King Performing Arts Center on the Auraria campus of the University of
Colorado-Denver. And then, in Houston, Desai will participate in a live call-in
on KTRH-AM, the highest rated talk radio station in the city, as well as
participate in meetings with key civic leaders.
Desai will be accompanied Jean Claude Faby, the New York Representative of the
UN Foundation and the Better World Campaign. In a distinguished career at the
UN, Faby was the Director for North America for the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de
Janeiro, where he also served as the spokesman for Conference Secretary-General
Maurice Strong.
